Steam has nothing to do with the decision to offer it, but IF the game developer DOES make one available, Steam can and does help distribute those alternate versions.

Why would they bother, when they're already working on new items, updates, fixes for issues IN that older version, etc etc? Usually, it's games that have modding available and *decent* developers that understand how much of a pain in the butt updating mods are.īut most game companies will not do this. It's a huge hassle, and takes WAY more effort to maintain different branches of their game. The functionality is and has always been there on steam.īut each and every GAME must be developed to support that - if the developers make a beta tree that's 100% on them to keep it working. I still play Minecraft versions 1.6.4 and 1.7.10 even though they are old. A good example of why I want to see this is Minecraft. In essence, I would like to see a list of game versions under the properties of games so I can switch between them as I'd like. There is no way to play older versions and it is very difficult, if not impossible, to talk to the game developers about it in a one on one conversation.

Steam usually, if not always, forces you to update a game once a new release comes out before you can play it. Among the games I play, some I enjoy less now then I did before for a variety of reasons, including version updates. I enjoy a large variety of games, and have seen many of them change over time. So this little tangent will be about the game version and forced updates in order to play most games.
